About Us..
The county was named for Benjamin Franklin. The county seat is Benton and the county was organized on January 2, 1818. When Franklin County was founded in 1818, however, the county was nothing more than a frontier outpost poised to serve as a witness to the growth of a great state and nation. Prior to Illinois becoming a state, the territory that is now Franklin County was at one time part of the State of Virginia; Knox County, Indiana; and St. Clair, Randolph, Gallatin, White, and Jackson Counties in Illinois. From 1818-1839, Franklin County encompassed the territory that includes present-day Williamson County. While Franklin County was established by the Illinois General Assembly on January 2, 1818, the county as it stands in its current form began on February 28, 1839.

LAUGHTER...
A career Army officer I once met was jumpmaster for his unit and was taking up a few novices for a drop. The flight was pretty rough, and after a while, the jumpmaster called off the jump because of high winds. As the plane headed back to base, and the pilot pulled off an unusually smooth landing, two of the neophytes got airsick.
"How come you could take that rough flight, but you couldn't handle the smooth landing?" asked the jumpmaster.
"Well, sir," one trainee explained, "We've always jumped out of planes. We've never actually landed before."
